Retro Real Estate is a real estate company based on Ikuchijima, an island located in the heart of the Shimanami Kaido, one of Japan’s most famous cycling routes. We specialize in traditional Japanese homes, including kominka (traditional Japanese houses), properties with farmland, and other unique homes that reflect the character of island life. Whether you are considering relocating, restoring an old house, or starting a two-location lifestyle, we are here to help you find a place that fits the life you envision.
After traveling around the world in 2023, our representative traveled across Japan in a self-built camper van in search of a place to call home. During that journey, he was drawn to Ikuchijima’s beautiful natural surroundings, mild climate, stunning scenery, and unique island lifestyle, and decided to relocate here in 2024. As someone who lives on the island, he brings firsthand knowledge of the area and its communities to help clients discover not only the right property, but also the lifestyle that comes with it.
At Retro Real Estate, we believe that finding a home is about more than simply choosing a property. Rather than starting with the question, “What kind of house are you looking for?”, we prefer to ask, “What kind of life do you want to live?” Whether you dream of living near the sea, restoring a traditional Japanese home, starting a small farm, or enjoying a two-location lifestyle between the city and the islands, we take the time to understand your vision and help you find a place that suits it.
Our experience also extends beyond real estate. Having operated and supported accommodations in Tokyo and Ikuchijima, we can assist clients interested in restoring traditional homes or starting accommodation businesses, including minpaku and ryokan operations. From property selection and renovation planning to preparing for the launch and building an operational structure, we can support you throughout the process.
In addition, our representative is a U.S. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) affiliated with an international tax and accounting firm, with which we also work closely. For clients purchasing property for business purposes, we can provide support in coordination with relevant professionals, covering everything from business planning to accounting and tax matters.
